What are Dental Veneers?

Irregular shaped teeth on top of symmetrical veneersDental veneers are thin custom coverings that are placed over the fronts of visible teeth to alter their appearance and give you that smile you have always wanted. Veneers are often made from either porcelain or resin material and create shells that modify the surface to address visual imperfections. The additions are tooth-colored and are indistinguishable from the natural tooth. A veneer is a cosmetic modification that is only intended to improve physical appearance and not fix any health related issues. Veneers can be applied to address dental situations regarding matters such as:

  • Tooth discoloration and stains
  • Worn down, broken, or chipped teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Teeth that are crooked, misaligned, or irregularly shaped

Porcelain Veneers

A porcelain veneer is one type of custom tooth covering made out of the durable, natural-looking, stain resistant material- porcelain. The thin shield is custom molded from the actual shape of your tooth. To ensure the addition blends naturally with your other teeth it is necessary that enamel be shaved off the tooth beforehand. The dentist will determine what shade to make the veneer so that it looks natural compared to your other teeth. The personalized tooth covering may take several days to create and ship so your dentist may provide a temporary veneer.

Composite Resin Veneers

A composite resin veneer is made up of a tooth-colored resin material that is bonded to the tooth. This type of veneer can be utilized better as a tooth extension rather than a cover. Therefore, it may be used to fix specific areas of a tooth instead of altering the entire surface as a porcelain veneer does. A composite resin veneer usually requires some shaving and shaping of the tooth, but normally less than that of a porcelain fixture. A dentist often has the supplies necessary to create this type of veneer in their office so it may take only one visit to complete the process. A drawback of the composite resin is that it is not as durable as porcelain veneer and may wear, stain, or need replacing sooner. On the other hand, composite resin veneers are easier to replace than porcelain veneers.

How long do veneers last?

With proper hygiene, porcelain veneers can be expected to last about 10-20 years or longer. Composite resin veneers have a shorter life span as the material is not as durable as porcelain. Both options are minimally invasive treatment options that drastically improve your smile. With any dental fixture, it is important to note that proper care and hygiene will extend the life of the product; whereas poor dental upkeep can significantly reduce the life of the synthetic structure. Avoid biting into hard food or materials that can chip or damage the tooth or veneer. Also, avoid exposure to acidic food and drinks and try to not allow them to eat at teeth for an extended period if possible. Regular brushings, flossings, and cleanings are essential for your natural teeth as well as for dental veneers.

How much do veneers cost?

Good work isn't cheap and cheap work isn't good. With that being said Bonita Beach Dental has found the best local master ceramist to provide the most beautiful veneers to our patients at an affordable price point. See some of our work in the smile gallery and see why our patients are continually impressed by the improvement to their smiles and confidence. Like crown and bridge work veneers are at the moderate price point but can make a drastic cosmetic change in as little as 2 visits.

Veneers possess a broad range of costs depending on where you get them done, the type of material used, the extent of the procedure, how many teeth, and what dentist you choose. Estimates range between $200-$2500 per tooth. Composite resin veneers are the lower to the middle portion of the cost spectrum ranging from $200-$1500 per tooth. The porcelain veneers are more expensive starting at $500 ($500 is a bargain!) and reaching as high as $2500 per tooth.
